En enero de 2012, As I Lay Dying entró en el estudio con el productor Bill Stevenson (NOFX, Rise Against, Anti Flag) y comenzó a trabajar en el material de su sexto álbum.

El 25 de enero, se anunció que se presentará el Mayhem Festival 2012 con Slipknot, Slayer, Motörhead, Anthrax, The Devil Wears Prada, Asking Alexandria, Whitechapel, Upon A Burning Body, I the Breather, Betraying the Martyrs y Dirtfedd

El 22 de junio, la banda anunció en el Metal Blade Records sitio web que su sexto álbum se titulará Despierto y está listo para el lanzamiento el 25 de septiembre. El primer sencillo del álbum, «Cauterize», fue lanzado el 25 de junio. Álbum editado bajo el sello Maverick con la producción de Toby Wright quien ha trabajado con bandas de gran trayectoria como Sevendust, Metallica, Korn y Alice in Chains, con este álbum se dieron a conocer en 2001 llegando a las listas de la Billboard debutando en el puesto 193, así mismo se hicieron acreedores de disco de platino por las ventas del mismo durante este año, también fueron conocidos por estar de gira en su época junto a Creed.

Lo más sobresaliente de la banda a mi modo de ver es la excelente voz de Hugo Ferreira.

Segundo disco de esta excelente banda editado este año, personalmente es de los que más sueno dentro de mi «playlist», pues la verdad la banda convence bastante y es un sonido muy agradable, muy bien producido, perfecto trabajo.

Personalmente siempre he sentido gran respeto por la música hecha en Australia y esta banda no es la excepción, pues se caracterizan por tener unos matices bastante buenos, mezclas muy bien definidas de géneros como el Alternative Metal y el Metalcore que suena bastante interesante, una voz muy melodiosa que tiende a dar coros desgarradores cortos pero que se hacen sentir muy bien en cada sencillo, este su primer álbum editado en 2009.
