Strapping Young Lad (SYL) es una banda de metal extremo Canadiense, formada en 1994 por Devin Townsend.Su sonido puede ser definido como death metal progresivo o incluso metal industrial, al que se le incorporan sintetizadores.
SYL comenzó como un proyecto personal del músico canadiense Devin Townsend al finalizar la grabación y tour del disco de Steve Vai «Sex and Religion», en el cual participó como cantante. Devin Townsend grabó la mayoría de instrumentos de su album de debut «Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing».
